This writeup shows the steps that you need to go through to setup your client system before you can use DbSizr. Step # 1: Make sure that you have 32 bit ODBC driver support on your client system. You can find this out by opening up the "Control Panel" Folder of your Windows 95 (TM) or Windows NT workstation system and look for the ODBC icon. If it does not exist, stop here and install ODBC support. Step # 2: Go to your database server and make sure that you have a valid account on the server that can allow you the access that is needed for the test script. You may want to create yourself a new database on the server called "testdb" with full rights, if you want to exercise the scripts that come along with DbSizr. Step # 3: Now, go back to the PC from where you want to run DbSizr and click on ODBC 32 icon in control panel. In the dialog box that pops up, choose the add option and choose a ODBC driver to connect to your database. If the driver that is needed to connect to your database does not exist, stop here and install the driver from the database vendor CD-ROM. If it does not come with the CD-ROM, you need to contact the vendor. Step # 4: Now that you have chosen a driver, you will see a pop-up window which asks you for details about the connecction you are about to specify. The Data Source Name is the name you choose to give to the database that you are trying to access. You also need to specify the name of the server to which you are trying to establish the connection. You can click on options to specify the database name on the server machine. If you see the Data Source Name that you added in the first pop-up window, you can proceed to the next step. Step # 5: Verify that you can access the data source from the client by testing manually. Use a program like MS-Query on the client side and see if you can login to the data source that you just created. If not, there is something wrong in your setup steps or the access privileges that are setup for your account. Please talk to your DBA. If you are successful in logging in, you are ready to start using DbSizr. Step # 6: Start up DbSizr and on the "Control Panel" in DbSizr, click on the "Edit User Credentials" button. You should supply valid username and password pairs here, without which DbSizr will fail. You can give the same username/password to all users if you so choose. Step # 7: Make sure that you set the number of users equal to 1. Run the setup script "SETUP.SCR" on your Data Resource. This will create the tables that you will need to execute your other test evaluation scripts. Running the evaluation scripts and looking over the contents of these scripts will give you a good background into how DbSizr works. You can then customize the benchmarking for your specific needs. Please note that every data resource that you need to use for your tests has to be registered using the ODBC driver dialog.
